THE WHITE LION
Stowupland Street

A drawing of the 1880s showing the White Lion sign, across the road can be seen The Staff Of Life.

The White Lion closed
about 1892, it was the building on the right in the foreground. The premises were
then subdivided into a dwelling house and a shop. The shop, seen above was used by
Frederick William Robinson listed as a coach builder in a 1900 directory. The
house was owned by a Mrs. Strickson in 1916 and the old stables at the rear were
used by Strickson's coal delivery business.
The right hand two thirds of the building were demolished in the early 1960s leaving the sorry remnant pictured below which ended its life as a storeroom for Hopgoods shop across the road. The coup de grace was delivered in the 1990s when this portion of Stowupland Street was demolished to make way for the Inner Relief Road. A survey was carried out prior to this and the building was dated to the late 14th C. much earlier than had been previously thought.
