STOWMARKET JUNIOR
SCHOOL
Childer Road
The British School was founded
in 1849. Abraham Jackson was the
first master. He came from Chard in Somerset he was assisted by his wife Mary
Ann [nee Spurr]. He went into the Independent (later Congregational, now United
Reformed) Church and had livings in various places, finishing at Debenham where
he died in 1881. A later master was Mr. Inkpen. In a letter of 25th April 1867
Matthew Arnold [poet and School Inspector] mentions coming to the school.
In 1913 it became The Junior Mixed Council School. In 1957 known as
Kingsmead Infant School and later as Kingsmead County Primary School. A
new school was built, Chilton Primary, for over-7s, leaving the 5-7year-olds at
Kingsmead. When Kingsmead closed in 1982 it re-opened as Abbots Hall School.
