THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF OUR LADY
As Simon Knott has written a full account of the Catholic Church on his SUFFOLK CHURCHES SITE I have only given an outline of it's history here.

The restoration
of the Roman Catholic Church in Stowmarket in 1879 was due to the
work of Adelaide Clutterbuck.
She
came to the town in 1878 with her husband, a brewer. Before this
time the town's practicing Catholics would have had to travel to Bury
St. Edmunds or Ipswich.

Stowmarket's
original Roman Catholic church.
The first church was an iron building in Milton Road. There was also an adjacent school. This "Iron Chapel" survived as a building until the 1980`s.

The
Church in Stricklands Road.
This church was succeeded by a permanent building in Stricklands Road (then known as Breese Lane) in 1884 which was substantially altered in 1970.
