THE PHOENIX TAVERN

The Phoenix first opened under that name around 1890 and was always associated with the Lillistone family. It was popularly known as "The hole in the wall"


A car advertising "Black Cat" cigarettes outside The Phoenix. James and Ellen Lillistone in the back seat. They also ran the tobacconist shop next door. The Phoenix closed in 1921, but the shop survived until 1987.

Until 2002 the the premises was a gentleman's outfitters, at the moment it is vacant.
