JAMES WOODS

James Woods founded an iron foundry around 1812 in the town which became one of the biggest employers in Stowmarket. It was variously known as Woods, Warner and Cocksedge, Woods and Cocksedge and then James Woods and Co.

James Woods was Born 24th Feb 1789 in Ipswich.
Buried Stowmarket cemetery 12 Jun 1877 age 88.
The above photograph was taken about 1869 by John Deazeley, one of the earliest photographers in Stowmarket.

The photograph below, likely to also have been taken by John Deazley shows James Woods standing by a combined engine and boiler manufactured by the company, a similar product is illustrated in "Stowmarket" by Robert Malster and also in "Suffolk At Work, Trades And Industries" by the same author. I am very much indebted to Ashley Barnard for allowing me to use this photograph.
