HAUGHLEY

A modern view from Duke Street, Post office on right, Kings Arms on the left Palmers Bakery in the centre. [photo - Denis Reynolds]

Looking down Old Street in Haughley, the walnut tree in the centre of the picture was felled in 1931. The windmill in Station Road can be seen, it was destroyed by fire in 1943. This picture was taken in the first years of the 20th century.

Taken from a similar viewpoint, but looking in the opposite direction, the post office is the large brick building. [Thanks to Denis Reynolds for the photo]

Denis writes -
"Walter Runnacles is standing outside The Kings Arms - his wife was Agnes nee Jeffrey. He was my mothers uncle. I am not sure of dates but I can remember visiting them as a boy so I guess he was Landlord in the 1920's and 1930's - perhaps earlier-"
Walter was the son of Absalom Runnacles and is listed in directories at the Kings Arms from 1908 to 1933.
