HOLLINGSWORTH'S HISTORY OF STOWMARKET

In 1844 the vicar of Stowmarket, the Rev A. G. H. Hollingsworth M.A. published by subscription "The History of Stowmarket". Limited to about 300 copies and containing much information obtained from the church chest of St Peters & St Mary’s church in Stowmarket, it covers a period AD 1 to AD 1844. As well as providing a unique insight into the history of Stowmarket, all the parishes in the ancient Hundred of Stow — Buxhall, Combs, Creeting, Finborough, Gipping,  Haughley, Harlestone, Old Newton, Onehouse, Shelland, Stowupland and Wetherden also feature, with places further a field being mentioned in the book.
From the Roman invasion through to the Battle of Hastings, the Doomsday book, general history, the visits of Queen Elizabeth I, the origin of the Poor Law and much more, make the contents a fascinating read.
Unfortunately, many of the original documents that were used from the church chest were destroyed, during a restoration some 25 years after publication, further adding to its uniqueness.
This new publication is a facsimile of the original and has retained for the most part an accuracy even down to the spelling (or mis-spelling) of words used in the text. The book also contains reproductions of illustrations and maps obtained from one of the few copies still around.
For those who don’t know of this amazing piece of work, the facsimile edition provides a unique opportunity to explore what for many is previously un-read history.
Priced at only £14.99p and available at the beginning of June 2002, this new version is not to be missed. With an initial print-run of only 3000, avoid disappointment by reserving your copy now.
