ELMER'S BAKERY
Stowupland Street

The building seen in
this early 1900s photo is now Girlings Bakery and has been a bakery from the
18th century according to the deeds. It was with the Elmer family from 1881 or
earlier.

William Herbert Elmer [1869-1908] whose name
appears above the shop front. He married Ada Sarah Reynolds in 1896. After
William's death Ada married Edgar Ramsey who was at the Pickerel Inn.
From 1915 the shop was in the hands of Edgar Tricker and his son Oliver Tricker before being run by the Girling family from 1936. On the extreme right can just be seen the shop of Rufus Terry, saddler.
Thanks to Rose Smalley for the photo of the shop, Denis Reynolds for the photo of W.H. Elmer and to Ashley Barnard, Dennis Tricker and Steve and Sue Williams for other information.
The
rusks that the shop sold were Suffolk Rusks, still available from Girlings
Bakery.
